The WAM Program is Wheels and Meals for parents with children diagnosed with pediatric sarcoma cancers. These pediatric cancers are very rare, however Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is rated number three in the United States in treating this disease. CCHMC pediatric patients and their immediate family will have access to care and support throughout their treatment. This funding to CCHMC will allow the same life saving opportunities afforded to Alex Dinkel.

Fortunately, Alex resides in the Greater Cincinnati Area and has the elite Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, with their experienced oncologists and surgeons to care for him.

Alex’s Ewing’s Sarcoma was a very rare skull based tumor located above his right ear. The surgery to remove the tumor on Alex’s skull was over eighteen hours. While recuperating from his original surgery and through additional state of the art medical testing, questionable spots were noticed on each of Alex’ lungs. Again, Alex under went surgery on his lungs. The spots were benign. His cancer treatment protocol was 42 weeks of chemotherapy and 6 weeks of radiation. Though his treatment protocol was difficult, Alex, through his strength of character, spirit, and his will to “Fight to Keep Staying Alive” and continues with his treatment to remain cancer free.

Because of Alex’s belief that each child needs a parent to accompany them on their path to life saving treatment at CCHMC, the WAM Program was developed. The purpose of the WAM Program is to provide children with pediatric cancers who reside outside of the Greater Cincinnati area, funds for transportation, lodging, gas, food cards and other necessities they may not be able to afford while receiving their entire treatment.

Alex further believes that only a parent can truly provide the support, reassurance, and love their child needs at such a difficult time, which is the best medicine that a child can receive. Alex believes that it was because of the love and closeness of his parents being with him which most contributed to his ability to keep fighting and moving forward with his dreams and believing that he will remain cancer free and continue to live a normal life.
